Artist Statement

My goal for this project was to explore the digital humanities by creating a three-dimensional interpretation of a Baroque, illustrated title page from one of Wellesley's Special Collections Rare Books - or, a book-scape. The book I chose to work from is Francis Bacon's De Augmentis scientiarum: of the advancement and proficience of learning, or the partitions of sciences. The title page was illustrated by William Marshall, a seventeenth century British engraver. Although I've taken some liberties with the content of my scene, both for practical and artistic purposes, each element that I've added thus far has been made to reflect some aspect of Marshall's design. Visit the link above to interact with my book-scape and to read more about the design process.

Interact with the Book-scape:
Move:

"w" - move forward

"s" - move backwards

Look Around:

"i" - look up

"k" - look down

"j" - look left

"l" - look right

Fly:

"u" - rise up

"o" - lower down

Animate Owl:

"r" - launch owl

"t" - lower owl

Instructions

To explore the book-scape, scroll to the scene below, click on it, then begin pressing 'w' until you have navigated into the hemisphere through the page. Once in the book-scape, you can continue to move forwards or backwards with 'w' and 's', move up or down ('u' and 'o'), look up or down ('i' and 'k'), turn left or right ('j' and 'l'), and animate the owl with 'r' and 't'. Pressing 'r' makes the owl fly up and forwards, while pressing 't' makes it fly down and back. Be careful not to click either 'r' or 't' while the owl is already in motion - this will crash the animation. If this occurs, refresh the page and try again. Enjoy!
